    Now get the ANA grading standards book. Its a must have also.

    Very true, but just remember, the prices listed in the book are the LEAST useful part of the book. Make sure you READ the first part of the book. First 30 pages or so, it gives you a very good background understanding of US numismatics. Unfortunately one thing it no longer includes is a good description of the minting process. A through understanding of the minting process is essential to identifying exactly what is going on with some early coins and identifying fake errors.

    The Red Book is an excellent source, especially since it has mintage data that is not available elsewhere.

    I think I paid around $20 for my ANA grading book.
