Vitellius 16 April to 22 December 69 AD - AR denarius. A VITELLIVS GERMANICVS IMP, bare head right / XV VIR SACR FAC Tripod, raven below, dolphin above I've had this well over 1 year. Shamefully, I thought I had lost it during a move into my current home. I found it last month in the bottom of a box where I keep most of my empty slips that my coins come in. It was definitely a sigh of relief.
Nice JT. I have the same issue, but I believe your portrait is much better: VITELLIUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: A VITELLIVS GERM IMP AVG TR P, laureate head right REVERSE: XV VIR SACR FAC Tripod, raven below, dolphin above Struck at Rome, Apr/Dec 69AD 2.9g, 19mm RIC 109, BMC 39, S 2201 And here is another with a not so flattering portrait: VITELLIUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: A VITELLIVS GERM IMP AVG TR P, laureate head right REVERSE: PONT MAXIM, Vesta seated right, holding scepter and patera Struck at Rome, Apr/Dec 69AD 1.44g, 19mm RIC 107
Interesting portrait on IamT's denarius. Unlike most Vitellius portraits one sees. He almost looks normal on that coin, unlike the more typical bloated and double -chined (usually encountered) portrait of his. Nice coin, btw!.
I like my slightly odd looking Vitellius. He looks a bit much like Otho so I assume it is an early die. Compare: http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=496556 I just had the thought that this coin could serve as two in a 12 Caesar set. There are coins with Julius and Augustus, Claudius and Nero and Vespasian with a reverse with both his sons. Carefully selected we could do a 12 Caesar set in just seven coins.
