Looking for some opinions on the rarity of these. I don't know much of anything about trade tokens but a good friend of mine just showed me one he acquired 40 years ago. It a virgil earp good for 5 in trade token.
I'll get pictures up later tonight when I get home but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone has any input on this. Anything at all helps. I know there are some experts on here in tokens. Thanks

I know it's rare and that's about it.

Something tells me they were created after Virgil Earp's lifetime - for the novelty value. I hope I am wrong though.

It would be helpful if your description was more specific. Wyatt and Virgil bounced all about, working in and owning saloons and of course gambling tables in saloons. A picture would of course be helpful as well.

The tokens issued by Virgil Earp were part of a talk on Western tokens given by Michael Wehner earlier this year at the British-American Token Congress in Seattle.

    It "feels" original.

Most of the fantasies have a few common denominators that this doesn't share.

There is no doubt in mind it's real.

Assuming Sawtelle is the town name, California (Los Angeles County) was the only western state with such a town. There were listed tokens as being issued from this town, but none by Earp were included in either Kappen's or Album's books on California merchant tokens.

The "Clinton" campaign button in the last photograph does nothing rather than create an illusory doubt on the whole lot:bigeyes:

CW, The best information I have come up with on this, is that Earp did in fact have trade tokens while in Sawtelle as a Saloon /gaming table owner. I believe he may have been in partnership with someone by the name Lou at this time. I'm still searching and will confer with another as well. I'm certain you also may be able to help further with this .

Determining value(s) is a difficult task with most tokens. There are extremely few pricing guides, and those that exist are generally wayyyyyy out of date. The best bet would be if you are lucky enough to find some sort of sale history.

This is true CWtoken. Now Virgil Earp was documented on land deeds in the Sawtelle area, but to date I have not been successful in my research of any General Business records. I am currently in the process of waiting for a response from a local (sawtelle ) Historian for assistance. I'll update as soon as I hear.
