For some time now I have been searching for a proper container to store my various capsules and holders. I thought about various safes and containers and neat boxes that could do the job. Last week I almost bought one of these cases

They come in boxes of 6 , 10 or 15 racks and they can hold up to 99 coins per tray, from holding rounds, air tilts , slabs , 2x2 , bars and everything ells ..... but they can get expensive; cheapest I found was 80USD for the box and then 20USD for each rack.

Now this is the option I was looking at today. A nice vintage safe , the seller wants 150 CAD for it . it's more then a century old "14 x 17" and 24" high" and he has been using it as a coffee table for the past two decades. I though i could just stack cheaper coin trays in the safe. I'm not sure if these babies are fire safe, but it would look kewl next to my desk :D

What would you guys do ? or would you opt for something different ...

The safe looks really cool. You could make some trays of your own for it. Can it be secured so that it can't be carted out the door?

I don't know as far as storage goes, but for $150 I don't know if I could pass it up just because it looks neat.

The one with the handle on top looks more like "pre packaging" instead of a safe.

The other one reeks of "LooK In Here for Goodies" so I would go with it so bad~folks could waste there efforts away from where the goodies really are.

That's my understanding too. All a safe does is tell the bad guys where to look. Or another saying is, "All a safe does is keep honest people honest". I like the safe and wouldn't mind having that one, but all my valuables are kept in the bank's safe - now that's a nice safe.

I have been looking at craigslist for an antique floor safe, and found several for very reasonable prices, all under $250 US.

However, a majority of them are actually pretty small from a storage perspective. They have large outside dimensions, but small inside dimensions. Most of my collection is in about a dozen albums, or in 2x2s in boxes. I probably could only fit 1/4 of my collection in it, and it would be tight.

I have looked at the gun safes, and that may be an alternative, but the price is very high. Larger ‘jewelry store’ safes are also an alternative, but also costly and very difficult to pick up and move to my house.

Also, in my mind the safe is just to keep the 'casual' five-finger discount from happening from a visitor, or a quick smash and grab robbery from wiping out my collection. If the thief wants into the safe, they will get in. I am under no illusions that a safe will offer 100% protection.

The truth is most criminals don't know didley squat about cracking safes, so unless they have a way to truck it off, the safe will stay where it's placed. Those old time safes are very heavy, and for $150 clams, I'd take it in a heartbeat!!

That's all true, unless the criminal holds a gun to your head, forcing you to open the safe. I think, especially in these bad economic times, one of the most dangerous things one can do, is keep valuables in the house. I also believe you've made the situation worse by locking them in a safe, now the criminal has to rob you when you or the family are home, so you can open it.

Nothing offers 100% protection, not even a bank's vault. But something is better than nothing. Fretboard is right, most criminals that break in are not equipped to break into a safe, and if they are then you probably have bigger concerns. If I were a safe-breaking criminal, I wouldn't be breaking into random houses hoping to steal a million dollar cashe from suburban America.

Yeah, I understand often it's not random - a friend tells a friend who tells a friend and by that time half the town knows what and where you have it.

Absolutely!, that's why you can't let anyone know that you collect coins. That means if you're having a garage sale, do not try to sell any coins there. :D

True. Loose lips not only sank the ships of our grandfathers, today they advertise to criminals all the goodies we keep in our homes.

  15. I really like that vintage safe. I would never put anything valuable in it but it would look cool in an office at work or in a study/office at home. TC

For $150 bucks I would buy that vintage safe and find a way to secure it. If for nothing else it is cool.
