Today I took additional important steps towards my 3rd Century project with the acquisition of a few Gallic coins. First up Victorinus, who ruled the Gallic Empire from 269-272 CE. He liked to sleep with his mens' wives, which led him to an early grave when an upset husband plunged a knife into him for making sexual advances towards his wife. This is one sharp little coin with a magnificent bust of Victorinus. Victorinus Ae Antoninianus Pax Avg And I did also acquire a nice budget Tetricus I, whom replaced Victorinus and was one of the last two Gallic Emperors. It has a nice Salus reverse, and while it may not be the sharpest coin out there, it is a decent example of its type and it came with a bargain price that was too good to pass up. Tetricus I Ae Antoninianus Salvs Avg And it kind of compliments nicely my recently aquired budget Tetricus II Tetricus II Ae Antoninianus Anyway, post anything you deem relevant.
If you appreciate humor, consider buying a DIVO VICTORINO PIO coin. He may have been a low life but he had good press.
That really is a nice Victorinus portrait, and the coin has much going for it besides that. Mine, on the other hand, has a nice portrait, but...
Nice job on the Victorinus. Here are a few of mine from the GALLIC EMPIRE (CE 260-274): POSTUMUS (260-268): RI Postumus 259-268 CE Antoninianus Cologne Providentia ex tif MARIUS (269): RI Marius 269 Gallic Usurper BI Ant CONCORD MILIT Clasped Hands VICTORINUS (269-270): RI Victorinus 269-270 CE BI Ant Gallic Empire PAX RI Victorinus 269-270 CE BI Ant Gallic Empire Salus TETRICUS I (271-274): RI Tetricus I 271-274 CE Ant LAETITIA TETRICUS II (273-274): RI Tetricus II 273-274 CE BI Ant SPES w Flower
Will your 3rd Century project include the Barbarous Radiates? I know a show dealer who had a hundred of them last year ranging from under $10 to $50 or so. Was there a recent hoard group or have the losers from hoards twenty years ago still not been absorbed? Some are so awful, I wonder if anyone will ever buy them. Some are quite cool but the difference is a matter of opinion.
I supose I might be interested in acquiring some samples eventually. Some barbarous coins can have really interesting style
I need a Marius to add to my collection. He went from armorer/blacksmith to emperor for a brief time. Also would love to get my hands on one of these aureii. Alas, it will likely never happen:
these are nice coins and these emperors are just as much a part of the history of Rome as any of the others. i've been scanning a few of Postumus and Tetricus over the past month to get for my collection and didn't realize there were l & ll of the latter till now, thanks to you the posters. There's always something to learn in this hobby/obsession.
I'll add my most recent Gallic dude... Tetricus I. 271-273. AD AE Antoninianus O: IMP C TETRICVS P F AVG, R: VIRTVS AVGG,Virtus standing left. Cologne mint. RIC V, 148, 20x23 mm, 2.3 g.
Here's my budget Tetricus from the Braithwell hoard. The Gallic Empire, Tetricus I (A.D. 270-273) AE Antoninianus 2.31g., 19mm radiate cuirassed bust right, rev., VIRTVS AVGG, soldier standing left holding spear and leaning on shield
Hmmm, well I tried to post this over the weekend but had some tech dificulties. This Victorinus and 2 of my Postumus came from the same hoard, ex YOC via JAZ. I need to get a reverse photo of my Tetricus II and still in need of a Tetricus I ( or maybe the other way around)
Cool buys @Sallent and some nice examples of those often crude emissions Here's my set of gallic emperors (after all, it's almost where I live) Postumus, Antoninianus IMP C POSTVMVS PF AVG, radiate and draped bust right VICTORIA AVG, Victoria advancing left, captive at her feet 3.65 gr Ref : Cohen # 377, Postumus, Antoninianus IMP C POSTVMVS PF AVG, radiate and draped bust right SERAPI COMITI AVG, Serapis standing left, raising right hand and holding spear 4.3 gr Ref : RCV # 10992, Cohen # 360 Postumus, Double sestertius truck in Cologne, AD 261 IMP C M CASS LAT POSTVMVS P F AVG, Radiate bust of Postumus right LAETITIA AVG, Galley travelling left 18.12 gr Ref : Cohen #177, RCV #11049 Marius, Antoninianus Mint #2 : Köln or Mainz MP C M AVR MARIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right VICT - ORIA AVG, Victory walking left, holding wreath and palm 3,2 gr Ref : RIC # 17, RCV # 11124, Cohen # 21 (20Fr), Schulzki 7a Victorinus, Antoninianus IMP C VICTORINVS P F AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right INVICTVS, Sol advancing left.
