    Hi,

Maybe you can help me to identify the date of this token. If you know what is the sign on the other side, let me a comment please.

    Is it a numismatic error?

I don't think it is a damage. Exemple, N have no bar and there are no shape or scratch where the metal was suppose to be. It's simply smooth as the remainder of surface. Letter D is like that too but I'm not an expert. Beads are more longer in this region too. Look like double beads. Beginig under N of CANADA to T of GRATIA. G and N of REGINA look like C and N of CANADA... missing some metal on top.

What do you think about this token ?

    Thanks.

When a coin is engraved, anything can happen. The coin has no numismatic value and can only be valued based upon it's being a "love token" Or a token made with an initial.

These are done with a real coin and is simply engraved on one side.

The parts of the lettering that you refer too can either be the result of the coin having been struck by dies with a little grease filling in those features or it could simply be damage caused as the jeweler that engraved the coin had to clamp it down somehow to work on it.

Either way, it really doesn't matter. As a coin it's damaged as a collectible "token" it will have some value but probably not much more that $20.00.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

I don't know if someone can remove the bar under the N of CANADA or remove metal on letters without let trace or scratch but that seems impossible to me. There are lot of gray, blue, green an orange reflection on this token... it's very beautiful to look with a loop. 20 dollars... i will never sell it for this price... i prefer let it in a drawer and take more age like a high-class wine :)

    Thanks.

I would say that the missing parts of the letter are possibly the result of hub breaks.

    Hi,

Someone can explain what is exactly a Hub Break ?

    Thanks.

The hub is similar to the die but on it the design is raised like it is on the coin. The hub is impressed into another piece of steel to create the die. Sometimes a piece will break off of the hub, typically part of one or more of the letters. Since that is missing from the hub it does not create that part of the letter in the die and the letter on the coin struck from it will also have that part of the letter missing. This is a hub break. Good examples that come to mind are seated half dimes that often have the top of the D in UNITED open, two cent pieces with the serif of the D missing, and most especially shield nickels that often have "broken letters" on the reverse, especially the 1868 hub of 68 design that can have as many as 5 broken letters on the same coin.

    Hi,

I add an image with more détails.

There are something like a very large S trace near the nose of Victoria Queen. I don't know if it's important but you can see 2 images of it. All A of CANADA seems to have a base problem too.

    Thanks.

    CDnum,

Think of it this way. If the reverse of a coin can be planed off with no remnant of the original design remaining. It would not be difficult to remove small parts of a letter or two as "clean up work" after the reverse was engraved. It is very possible to remove small portions of details.

That being said, I think Conder proposed an excellent possibility.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi,

I think Conder proposed the only one possibility. I'm not an expert but it seems to me impossible to modify it without trace or scratch (like a trace of the breath of Queen :) ). As you can see on picture, there are no trace on surface near letters. Beads are double on a certain part of the token. If someone is able to do something like that... he will do it perfectly... Why remove only a part of letters... This is a non sens for me. Remember that you see it with a big zoom... this token is small like a dime. I like the idea that someone made a Love Token with a numismatic error coin without date. If i can find the emblem on the other side, maybe i will have an answer. The quality of design is very fine and was not made by anyone. There are something like a crown on the top of letter F or E. C is like a horseshoe.

    Thanks.

Your entitled to your opinion but it is apparent that you haven't seen anything much like this before. Something as simple as a filled die could have effected the coin even before it was used to make the "token".

There are many scenarios that could have easily caused this. In any case, it really doesn't matter as a love token is almost never considered as a coin or numismatic item after it is made. It falls into a category known as exonumia. The value of the coin itself has no bearing on the piece anymore.

I do agree that the strongest likelihood is what conder suggests.

    Thanks,
    Bill

PS: when you've seen hundreds of love tokens and other things, such as Hobo nickels, you would be amazed at what minor and major modifications are done as they are made. because it is nonsense to you does not mean it does not occur. People whack coins with hammers, to me that's nonsense but it occurs all the time.

    Hi,

I don't say it is impossible... but when you have the coin in your hand and you look at it with loop... it seems to be impossible to do. Details are very fine on surface around letters... and there are uniform color (gray, blue, green, orange) without peeling or scratch... There are no color like that on the other side... If you look with a loop the other side, it is easy to see couple of metal chip and little error... but not on the Queen Victoria side...

For the value... the value of something is the value that someone pay for... not what someone suggest :)

    Thank for your comments.

    Hi,

I add some pictures of this Love Token because i found other errors on the Victoria word. I don't know what it is... but it's incredible to see number of errors on this token. Look like a vapo-rub breath of Victoria Queen :)

    Hi Rockdude,

Yesterday, i used a microscope to see if there are some scratch where metal is missing... nothing... lines seem to be continue (i'm not an expert...). One letter A is full of metal in the hole... another letter seem to be double (background)... There are a lot of blue, green color.

I read an article about invert A/V and die break on Victoria coins... maybe it is relate. I don't know.

Number of errors on this token is incredible. If it is a fake, i don't know how someone can do that. If not, be a Love Token permit to survive year after year instead of being traded against a chewing gum :smile

Here's a love token I picked up a couple days ago off ebay. It doesn't have much to do with yours and the errors but it is a love token and I found a spot to show a pic. :D

I got it for a little under $10. I thought it was a little bigger but it's just about the size of a nickel. :D
