Hi All When going through this collection I inherited a friend of mine who collects coins (I am just starting, he has been a collector for 50 years) noticed this and pulled it out - A fairly warn 1898 Barber dime, but its especially thin - Pic shows it next to a current dime - its about half as thick - and "wavy" if that makes sense. My friend said it might be a case of using a wrong planchet at the mint - I have no clue. Would love some feedback!
Acid bath, or ... contemporary counterfeit? The latter would be interesting. It just looks "off". But I suspect @ldhair is correct on the acid theory, which would account for the thinness, as well as it looking strange.
Interesting! Funny now that you mention it I remember my mom talking about doing this stuff in high school science (back when you could still use acid in a classroom....) Cool reaction re: the thinning
