    Hi All

When going through this collection I inherited a friend of mine who collects coins (I am just starting, he has been a collector for 50 years) noticed this and pulled it out -

A fairly warn 1898 Barber dime, but its especially thin - Pic shows it next to a current dime - its about half as thick - and "wavy" if that makes sense.

My friend said it might be a case of using a wrong planchet at the mint - I have no clue. Would love some feedback!

Welcome to CT. Your coin looks to have had an acid bath. Not an error coin.

Acid bath, or ... contemporary counterfeit?

The latter would be interesting. It just looks "off".

But I suspect @ldhair is correct on the acid theory, which would account for the thinness, as well as it looking strange.

Interesting! Funny now that you mention it I remember my mom talking about doing this stuff in high school science (back when you could still use acid in a classroom....) Cool reaction re: the thinning
