I was never in the market for a lifetime issue of Faustina Sr. but this one had popped up a few months ago & I saw it in my usual new listing run, and this isnt Ebay. After thinking about I knew something was special about it. Instead of the usual Peacock beneath throne and scepter behind, this was seated on throne. not a single online reference had this particular type & only one on a old CNG auction mixed lot, which was actually this coin. Well I bought the coin and thanks to Ardatirion & Curtis Clay, it is indeed a fairly rare type. Below is the Curtis writeup & of course the coin. FAUSTINA Sr. (138-141 AD) AR Denarius Lifetime Issue O: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA Draped bust right. O:IVNONI REGINAE Peacock seated on throne and scepter behind. 18mm 3.5g RIC-340, RSC-221 BMC (Antoninus Pius) 145 (same reverse die) Ex Robert Kutcher Collection (Triton X, 8 January 2007), lot 1606 (part of)
Very nice. Its cool to get involved in a subset and see coins like this, that you can discover how unusual it is. I bet you 100 roman coin collectors would walk past this coin and think its nice, but maybe only 1 of those 100 would understand the unusualness. Really cool pickup. I think we should start calling you the Empress expert.
Congrats! Thats pretty cool to get a coin like that. It is also a pretty nice portrait too, and kinda looks like some nice blue around the peacock.
Btw Mat I notice you REALLY like this coin, as its your new avatar. If you don't mind, how much did she run? I am simply curious.
