Someone told me recently that one of the earliest coins minted by the United States bore an image of Moses on the coin. My gut reaction is "that is ridiculous," but not being a coin historian or even slightly knowledgeable about early coins, I was wondering... Has there ever been a biblical figure on any American coin? Certainly there have been figures from mythology, Mercury comes to mind, but how about mainline current religions? Thanks.
The closest I can think of a "biblical figure" is Joseph Smith hand signed some broken bank notes as Vice President of an Ohio bank. Of course, only some of us would consider him a "biblical figure". So no, OP, your source is wrong. I guarantee you the US mint never struck a Moses coin, and 99.9% sure no states did before that.
Just off hand the only piece I can think of that might have a figure confused for Moses would be the St Patricks fathings (A standing obviously religious figure. The figure of King James on the other side the a crown floating in the sky could also be confused for Moses with the crown representing God, the king of heaven.) but although they were used here they were not struck here.
