I'd like a little help with a question I think I already know the answer, but just want to be sure. Over the last month or so I've been looking at slabbed large cents. What I see on many of these in MS 62 and 63 is somewhere on the coin is a small green spot somewhere. Amazingly I see this more on these two MS grades than I do on AU 55 and 58. Am I right to presume looking at a pictiure through a slab this is verdigris and over time will only get worse?
Yes. But it will only get worse if moisture is allowed to get to it. And that can be moisture in the air for slabs are not airtight. So -the possibility of it getting worse can be greatly negated with proper storage. Don't use proper storage and yeah, it is going to get worse. edit - And by the way, you see it on MS coins for 2 reasons - one it appeared there after the coins were slabbed. And it is there because people ar reluctant to try and remove it completely on MS coins because they fear the coin will be damaged and thus no longer be MS.
Thanks Doug for taking the time to answer. Living in Florida we have no shortage of moisure around in the air.
