This has sat in my Intercept Shield album for years and I decided to pull it out and update the photos. I noticed a bit of green on the obverse, should I use Verdi-care or just leave it alone?
That poor INC has already been cleaned to an inch of its life. IHO Verdi-care may help with the green deposits.
I would only very carefully spot treat the O in OF, the spot to the left of the C in CENT and speck at 2PM by the wreath. I would not cover the whole coin with VC. More later...* The black residue doesn't appear to be corrosion. I don't think the coin has been cleaned in the past 50-100 years. It takes decades to form that black, gum residue I see around the devices. Personally, I never remove that if possible. The coin will definitely appear cleaned if that's removed IMO. I like that old original black crud, it is not harmful to the coin and demonstrates the originality of the surfaces. * Dip a sharp pointed tooth pick in VC, carefully touch it to paper to remove most of it but leave enough for a micro-drop. Steady hand, use a magnifier, and apply only to the corrosion spot forming a small dome of VC over it. Allow to stand 2-3 minutes. Touch tip to paper again to remove most of the VC. Put the tip on the spot and rotate back and forth and apply some pressure. You may need to clean the tip or repeat this a few times, if you flip the toothpick, rewet it with VC, dab mostly dry on paper. Never use dry implements. If the corrosion persists - leave it there. Dab off the excess VC and let it dry for a couple of weeks. Try to confine the VC to ONLY the corrosion spot as much as possible. Hope this helps and good luck in your conservation projects!
Alright update time: Overall, not too bad the reverse spots went much easier than the obverse spot. But much better looking, I think.
