Hello I visited variety vista and am a little confused. When I look at say a DDR or RPM I am expecting to see a picture of that particular error. It sometimes may show 10 pictures of various parts of the coin. So are they saying for this error it should have all these features or it may have them? I have had coins with the main error and say two of the ten photos match, but not all. So what does that mean? Its not an error unless it has all ten attributes or what? Thanks in advance for you help!
The pics are close ups of the full coin, Yes they should all match. If you noticed that there is stage A,B,C and show you what the variety look like in different die stages, A being early die state.
The extra pictures besides the "main" variety pic(s) often show additional "die markers" that help to identify the particular variety. In many cases an RPM or Doubled Die will have a subtle character and be hard to definitively attribute, especially if there are other similar coins of same date/MM. In these cases the die markers are of utmost importance to ensure proper attribution. In many cases, the die markers are more obvious than the variety. A large die crack, gouge or chip, or other very obvious and unique die marker can often be used to identify a variety very quickly.
I have found two different paw/claw versions on several 2008P Alaska Quarters. One shows 5 separate, distinct claws, and the other looks like six claws or the 5th claw is bent and split. Anything on this ?
