Can anyone help me out with this coin? The seller is listing it with a grade of "G-" and attributions of "B-3" and "R3", which I assume have something to do with the dies used, etc.? I realize it's not very high quality. The seller is only asking $60 which seems quite reasonable; many CBQ's I see are priced a good bit above Greysheet (more than other coins). I doubt the seller will provide better pictures, but I could always ask if you think it is necessary.
B-3 is the Browning number, which is the minor variety signifying the die marriage for this coin. I don't have my attribution books with me right now, but off the top of my head it must be either a B-3 or B-4 since all the other 1834 die marriages had reverses from dies made from different master hubs than this coin. R3 (scarce) is the rarity of the B-3 die marriage. If it's a B-4 then it would have a rarity of R1 (common), but I don't see any reason to doubt the B-3 attribution since R3 isn't really significant. Rarity doesn't really start to impact price for these varieties until you hit at least R5. There's no reason to pay over Greysheet for small capped bust quarters in lower grades. Greysheet for a 4 is at $50, which seems high to me compared to what you can get for not much more. They tend to be overpriced online, but at shows I've been able to get quite a few nice VFs in the $90 to $150 range. A lot of people price these from the Greysheet, and as there are significant price jumps between VF and XF and between XF and AU, you can get some great coins at VF35+ and XF45+ where they are right on the line.
