Well, sure enough, I’m looking through the archives, and I see all this discussion and excitement about these VAMs, and so, naturally, I ask myself, what the heck are these little buggers? And so, sure enough, that leads me to a web page, and now I’m looking through these 1921-D VAM varieties (such as the infamous “VAM-1AD (Old JOH-1) Beanie S–Die break top S in STATES,” etc.), and so, naturally, I decided to look at my 1921-D, just to see if I can’t get lucky and it fits any of these. And, sure enough, it didn't. But, determined, I kept on searching, and, lo and behold, I came across another VAM web page...and, there it is, big as life, my 1921-D, the newly discovered (well, as of April of 2004, anyhow) “1921-D VAM-1AS Die Breaks 3rd Left Star & 92" (rarity: 2 stars on a scale of 5)! I was so excited, I almost choked! Now, as I don’t have a digital camera (sorry), you’ll have to bear with me and go here for a reasonable facsimile of my 1921-D with this exciting variety from this mint that only coined silver dollars for one year until it obviously figured out the heck with these darn things the dies break so much!...but, I digress): http://www.rjrc.com/vams/1921d_vam1as.htm. The VAM I have is an earlier version of the “1921-D VAM-1AS Die Breaks 3rd Left Star & 92" (rarity: 2 stars on a scale of 5), as the imperfection hadn’t yet extended to the “Left Star.” So, OK, just one question, now what? :)

Oh I don't know about that, SD. I mean, just because I have this other one (a 1921-P) with 180 degrees of obverse die cracking (and a little on the reverse, too) and I just know it's going to keep me awake all night until I can find a VAM site that can help me identify it, that doesn't mean I'm obsessed (I mean, necessarily ).

    eddiespin,

I am glad I searched the forums for 1921-D VAM as I have one just like yours and at the link! I can't be saure since I don't have the coin with me but I believe mine may have even more Die Cracks than noted. I also have a 1921-P with lots of Die Cracks and now must try to figure out which VAM it is!

I never dreamed that there could be so many VAM Varieties until I realized that these are worth looking for, found some and then tried to look up which ones I have! WHEW and I thought Lincoln Cent Errors and Varieties could be tough at times! You wonder how the Mints ever made a coin that did not have errors on it or was not a Variety!!! LOL!!!

    eddiespin,

After re-reading your posts and looking at my 1921-D and 1921-P, I realized that I may the exact some VAM'd Morgans that you have! I believe that my 1921-D VAM 1AS was struck near or at the point of Die failure for both Obverse and Reverse Dies. My 1921-D has Die Cracks all around the perifery of the coin on both the Obverse and Reverse and most exxtend from rim to rim or intersect others that do. I am hoping that this is significant in the value of the coinand would make it highly sought after as possibly being one of last or the very last coin struck with this set of Dies.

My 1921-P also has numerous Die Cracks on both the Obverse and Reverse and hope someone knows of a link that may hap in identifying which VAM it is.

    SuperDave,

I am sorry that I have not posted any pictures! I have had very little time lately for anything other than making a few postings. I plan to take some pictures of some of my Morgans on Friday to try to get some listed on eBay. I will try to take some pictures of the 1921-D as well as two 1921-P's and now a 1921-S that I picked up today that has doubling on many of the stars and on a few of the letters on the Obverse.

    SuperDave,

I am sorry but I cannot get any decent pictures of the any of the coins! I know that the lighting is a problem but also believe that I need to purchase a Digital Camera more suited for closeup pictures of coins!

Hey Frank, I'll bet our '21-Ps could be bookends! I finally got a digital camera, so I'll put up some pics. I also have a '21-S with a small die crack on the back (that'd be "reverse," for all you technical guys/gals :)). Anyway, pics coming in a few...take a look...

Here ya go Big (I mean Super :)) Dave...sorry for the long wait. This is my '21 Philly. Hope it's all it's cracked up to be. ;) Figure these images don't require positional explanation. If you can ID the variety, hey, that'd be grrrrreat!!!
