If I were to start a Morgan collection would you suggest a regular morgan collection or a VAM collection?
Hi! and if I haven't said welcome to the forum, Welcome. The Morgan is a beautiful coin. With the rarities it has and its popularity, a collection can be very price driven. I prefer the VAM collection, based on something like the Hit List 40,Top 50, Hot 50, Top 100, etc on VAMworld.com. A better chance to complete. Either way a challenge. Jim
I dont have a local dealer as I am in the military stationed overseas. Do you know any reputable online retailers for VAM
For the majority of VAMs, one can usually find a slabbed example, such as ANACS, ICG, NCG, PCGS. so that the grade and authenticity is established. Since those important factors are fairly well taken care of, it then rests more on the dealers reputation and pricing. Since you most likely utilize USPS with an APO or something, shipping probably isn't a problem. I usually throw a new dealer into google, and if anyone has had a complaint, it usually shows up in the search. I do like the guarantees that PCGS and NCG offer with their coined slabs. Ebay can be used also if you look at their feedback and return policies. It can give you an idea of the price difference between a PCGS and an ANACS of the same grade, just figure in the paypal fees. Hope this helps. Jim
Personally I would start first with a basic set of Morgans, just to get familiar with the series, before starting to collect VAMs. There are many options, you could do a set just by date, or mint mark, or a set of 1 Morgan for each year. But if you're interested in going straight into VAMs VamWorld has a section call Buy,Sell,Trade VAMworld - BSTA - Discussion VamQuest is a site that's specifically dedicated to VAM auctions VAMquest: VAMs, Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars Auctions And then there's always eBay where you can always find tons of VAMs.
