My understanding of Vam Morgan Dollar The initials of Van Allen & Mallis is how VAM 's came about. These two researched Morgan's and Peace dollar die pairs. Technically, all Morgans are vams. 150 have been recognized at this point as having real value, even though discoveries are being made all the time. You have the top 100 and hot 50 Vam's. Some people scoff at vam's, however I do not. For example, lots of different die pairs were used and all exhibit subtle but distinct differences. How can you tell if you have one of the top 100 or hot fifty? Under a micrscope or a good loupe look for doubling and other unusal lines that should not be there.:kewl:

I have about 45 morgans in my collection and up till recently I have disregarded the VAM variety designation. As of last week I have been looking carefully at all my coins, especially my morgans and have found aspects of the coins that are different than the regular issued coins. Example: Today I was looking at the date of an 1886 morgan and noticed that the "1" in the date was doubled, I dont know if it's a VAM, but it invigerated me to keep looking at the rest of my morgans. Wonder how I missed that?
Here is a list of Morgans I have sent off that came back with a Vam designation. These were all sent to NGC. 1878-P Vam 83 low 8 b1 Reverse-MS 63 1878-P Vam 42 7 0ver 7 tail feather -MS 63 1880/79 Vam 9 large S MS 63 1880/9 Vam 11 Medium S- MS 64 1886 Vam 1C '3+2' Reverse die clash -MS 65 These were coins that I owned that sat in a closet for twenty-five years.
