This one is brown in tone. It's in a plastic case. I've never seen one toned like this. Can someone tell if it's real? Fake? Value?
My stepdad had some gems. He was in the coin biz his whole life and started collecting at 10. That being said he had some fakes too. This is one of his.
Looks like it might be in a plastic coin capsule. Are these your photos or something someone sent you? Z
Never mind, I need to read. The color looks natural for a piece that hasn't been handed in a long long time. Z
I've seen silver dollars and halves that were toned brown. It all depends on what kind of an environment it was kept in. Is this a coin that a quick dip would help? Or should the OP leave it alone? Either way it's a nice coin.
If you believe it's a fake, some more photos out of the holder would be nice. To tell you the truth, it looks genuine to me from the first set of photos.
He said it was his dads and his dad did own some fakes. He wasn’t referring to this one being counterfeit.... I do love the seated ladies. This piece is not raising any alarms for me. And the toning is in line with what I would expect from an unmolested 150 year old silver coin. I believe you have a good coin here.
Have you considered taking it to a coin dealer and having them do XRF testing and such? Usually by testing with an XRF machine, then weighing it, then measuring it’s dimensions you can tell if it’s fake or not. Even the very best counterfeiters usually make mistakes in one or more of these areas and best of all none of it is destructive.
As I read it, his father had some good coins and some fakes, and just that this is one of his coins. Not saying it is fake.
