I looked up ebay sales on Ike sets, generally they sell for under $150. I saw one typical 31 coin set sell for under $125. Looked up in Greysheet what sets sell for, that are based on the type II dollar, if that is not there what is it worth?
Buying or attempting to place a value on a set coins sight unseen is difficult. Unless each coin is removed from the album and clearly photographed front and rear it is nearly impossible to judge (grade) the condition of the coins. Relying on the sellers description often times leads to disappointment. If you are interested in an Ike set why not buy an album and purchase each coin individually? The Ike series is a lower cost way of enjoying the thrill of the hunt of coin collecting. Peace, and enjoy the hobby!
I'll leave answers up to someone that's into the Ike dollars. I find it confusing, you'll see 10 coin proof date set, 11 coin proof date set with the type 2, sets of 21 coins, sets of 32 coins, theres 1972 type 1, type 2 and type 3. sets of 31 coins.... I don't know how many there are and what constitutes a "set". but I think it's crazy when I see a 32 coin set sell for around $225, and an 11 coin proof set sell for $225, and a 21 coin BU set sell for $125. I think most of the buyers on there are confused on what they are or aren't getting also, and even so, the prices paid just aren't logical when it's compared. found this in sold listings, 11 coin proof date set PR69 PCGS sold for $245. $22.27 each seems like a decent deal to me! https://www.ebay.com/itm/3250243737...=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
https://www.ikegroup.info/?page_id=30 wow, more info than i ever thought I might want to know about Ike dollars Thank you!
Thats certainly true but realistically there’s really only going to be 3 to check closely. The 71 P, 72 P, and the 76 Type 1. Those are the most common mixed for legitimate value in a grade you could realistically expect in an album. It’s a pretty safe bet off the bat that’s there’s no 66 or. 67 grades sitting in an album
If a 77 or 78 was a dog I wouldnt really care that much, those can be replaced very cheap. I'd happily trade those being trash for a decent to nice 76 Type 1 which are usually dogs
Had fun about 30 years ago cutting up mint sets and breaking proof sets to build mine. Still in the Dansco and looking sweet.
Big dollar Ike's are fun to collect. Easy to find but difficult to get high grades. I purchased a Dansco album with 31 coins all 64+ except the 1971. Still looking for the 1971.
If you're fortunate to have a relatively current red book, it will list all of the varieties for the Ike dollars; or you can just go to Wikipedia or other sites dedicated to the Ike dollars and you should have all the info you need to either purchase a Dansco album set or begin your quest one coin at a time.
We have two complete sets one for each granddaughter. I have never understood why Ike's were not all that popular. They are hard to find in AU or UNC condition though unless you buy collector sets. Took us a while but got it done. Thanks for sharing good luck. If they are valuable to you, they are worth more than money!
Most of the ads I have seen are usually the same-$199.00 complete, in B.U. & Proof, in a Dansco album. That may change though simply due to the lack of availability of Dansco albums. I have no idea about EBAY or other online venues.
I should label this with a disclaimer though, if that's the proper term. These sets at this price are from big box ads like L&C, Coast Coins, Yesterdays Change, etc. Most are listed as "Premium" coins in the sets. That terminology could mean sliders in B.U. and less than 69's in proof. Depends on who is putting the sets together at any given time. I would be pretty sure that you are not going to get registry condition coins at this price point.
I've had good results with L&C, although my purchases have been for single slabbed coins, not sets. I would think if you contact them concerning the quality of any set you will find out what you need to know before purchasing.
I call this the red book Ike set. 24 non-proof, 11 proof... Here are the 24 non-proof... Here are the proofs... a) the 4 brown Ikes... b) the 7 that come in proof sets (ignore the '79 proof set)...
Ok. That lays out a nice set that represents the coin well. A nice set for a novice on up to put together with not a lot of money or frustration. Nice!
