Am hoping that someone here could give me some info on this 1906 Olympic medal. It is obviously damaged and circulated but wondering if there is a market for it and what it might be worth. Am also curious at to who actually received them and for what. I could only find one other match to this one which was included with a silver medal in a 2008 Heritage auction for $800 but that was obviously money paid for the silver.
I'm assuming that the "1906 Intercalated Games" (?) are the same thing (at least Wikipedia says so). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906_Intercalated_Games#Medals_awarded There were 78 golds awarded. Don't know if that helps or not. Where did you get it? Edit: Heritage Link referenced in OP
The medal originally had a pin & ribbon attached to it. The damage occurred when someone removed it. The medal was struck in silver with a 24mm plain edge by engraver Maison Nissiotis, and it is estimated to be worth $240 in VF and $300 in EF in original condition. I found this medal in a large mixed lot of coins from a pawn shop. It is about the size of a U.S. quarter. Chris, you state it was struck in silver but this one does not appear to be of that composition. Does that source say for what purpose this medal/ribbon was issued? Thanks!
