I am new to error coins and was wondering if someone could help me with valuations fot these coins. Thanks Joe
I have been collecting about 10 years and am into modern coins and love variety cents. My dad got me into collecting when the '95 doubled die cent was found. Well my dad was into errors and also put away alot of modern mint sealed stuff. proof & mint sets, state quarter bags & rolls for that matter nickel half and dollar rolls& bags mint sealed. What he did mostly was buy from the mint let a couple years pass and list it on e-bay. He caught a couple real fliers but said if he held stuff 1 year he consistantly averagerd 25-30%. Anyway he passed last month and my mom knows nothing about coins. I listed some stuff on e-bay but the prices I see listed for some of I posted seem crazy. Like the Sac. die adj. strike. I see it's twin sister lister on a highly respected error specialist's site for $995. I'm not sure if prices like that are reasonable or not. I do plan on selling them along with other stuff and would like to get fair value. I do not want to gauge anyone but at the same time I don't want to list something at a dollar and have it sell for 2 because it was an off week at the bay. I laugh when I see e-bay sales that say " I can't grade" , "estate sale", "inhereitence" but I guess I am in a similar position because I do not know errors and of course I can do a completed auction search and get the past 2 weeks prices or look in inventories and get opinions that way which are a snapshot at best and can be off the wall. Speaking to knoweledgable specialists and collectors I think is a better way to go. Isn't that why there are forums? Thank you Joe
Thanks for replying Joe. Sorry for your loss. I'd wait for MikeDiamond's input. I've come to trust his vast knowledge more than most and still learn from him daily. You might want to ask if he can help you outside of the forum. I don't know mike personally, but I figure there's no harm in asking. As for realizing values in ebay I always look at it through these 2 clichés: 1. Everything is only worth what some sucker is willing to pay for it. 2. A sucker is born every minute. Good luck, and again, condolences
I'm not a dealer. So any pricing info I provide should be corroborated with a second and third opinion. Your elliptical clip cent is probably worth $75 - $85. Nickels on cent planchets are hovering around $200 these days. Somewhat less if there's no date. I would think the very weakly struck Sac $ (i.e. "die adjustment strike") is worth somewhere between $300 and $400. The Sac dollar with the 135 degree die rotation is probably worth $250 - $300. The way off-center SBA dollar should hover around $200. The slightly off-center and broadstruck SBA's would be worth maybe $75. The way off-center Delaware quarters should be worth $200 - $250 apiece. The way off-center PA and NH quarters might be worth $175. The two cents struck through capped dies are probably worth $30 - $35 apiece. The dime missing a reverse clad layer might be worth $40. What's with the 1999 quarter with no state I.D. on the slab? These are eBay-level prices. In a dealer's showcase the prices will be jacked up to an unconscionable degree.
Thank you all for your help. At least now I can have some realistic expectations for these. And I am sure others have learned some from this as well. Sometimes I ask a dealer their buy price on a item I'm interested in. It is to me a sign how strong the market for that item is.
