I've had alot of Valentinian AEs over my 6 years of collecting ancients & as much as I would like a silver, my budget keeps me from acquiring one. But I found this one about a month ago & got it pretty cheap and at this time, is my favorite of the AEs I have bought of him. And it is SMKB, the dirt on the B obscures part of the letter. Nice score Mat. No AE2 of his in my collection, "only" an AE1 and a siliqua. VALENTINIEN I (364-375) - LYON Silique, 364-367, Imitation A/ D N VALENT-INIANVS P F AVG Dominus Noster Valentinianus Pius Felix Augustus, Notre Seigneur Valentinien Pieux Heureux Auguste Buste à droite, drapé et cuirassé, diadémé (Perles). Argent, Poids : 1.81 gr, Diamètre : 18 mm, axe des coins : 2h RIC IX manque , RSC manque, BASTIEN N/C La monnaie est sur Nummus-Bible Commentaires : It is undoubtedly about an imitation, realized by copy of die of miliarens of the mint of Lyon (Cf RIC 5). On the observce, the titulature with this break T-I (VALENT-INIANVS) is totally unknown of the monayage of this emperor. The plan of the face of the emperor, in particular the eye, and the typography, does not deceive on the unofficial character of this silique. On the reverse, the legend was officially used in the golde and silver issues for this mint. No silique was struck with this complete legend, but rather in RESTITVTOR-REIP. However, the RIC gave, for the mint of Nicomédie, a silique in the identical reverse, but in the correct titulature of the observe (RIC 5). An imitation for the mint of Thessalonica gave one quasi-identical but incomplete reverse (RESTITVT-REIPVBLICAE), property of British Museum. Weight observed by the copy of British Museum ( CGR142564): 2.23 gr http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/search.aspx?searchText=CGR142564 In October, 2013, a detectoriste discovered an identical siliqua, the same die of observe and reverse, a little bit heavier (1.96gr). It was announced in the PAS http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/590284 Fiche de la monnaie sur la base Siliquae
