I wasn't going to post this until it arrived, but we need to get back to business, so I recently purchased this Valentinian, because i liked it. It hasn't arrived so I haven't tried to attribute it, but any help is greatly appreciated. Sellers photos.
Valentinian II http://esty.ancients.info/ricix/type12.html assuming there is a faint thrid G on AVGGG?
Nice coins for sure. One thing though I agree that we should always buy coins we like. One problem for me is.....I can never afford them, and I am very unlikely at winning in lotteries.
Nice coin, my only one of him. Valentinian II (375 - 392 A.D.) 32 views Æ2 O: D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust right holding spear and shield. R:GLORIA ROMANORVM, Valentinian II standing facing, head right, in galley, raising right hand, Victory at helm, wreath left, T in left field, cross in right, ANT[...] in ex. Antioch 5.6g 21.8mm RIC IX 59b
Thanks guys. Nice piece of 'reference' material there, Doug. Nice coins everyone. Thanks for sharing them.
Doug is right; it is Valentinian II. It is a cute type and inexpensive for him, Theodosius, and Arcadius. It is very rare for Gratian and it is rare, but the usual AE type for Eugenius, who is a rare emperor. I like mini-sets, so I would want the Theodosius and Arcadius to go with it.
@> Doug. (or Valentinian) From what I can see, Doug, there is NO third 'G'. There is a 'Dot' after 'BSIS' in ex. RIC IX Siscia 39A does allow for the 'Dot' but I cannot see an example with only two 'G's. (See photos below)
