    Valentinian I AE3, Siscia mint. 364-375 AD. 3.0g, 19mm

OBV: DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG. Pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right.

REV: GLORIA ROMANORVM, Emperor walking right, head left, holding labarum and dragging captive behind him. No fieldmarks. Mintmark BSISC in ex.

REF: RIC IX 5a, type I.

There is something about the surface of the reverse of this coin that defies taking photos of it. While it is still a rough coin, the legends are more readable in-hand, and the design is more glossy and clearly defined. But anyways, I could see the mintmark, where you cannot see it here hardly.

This is the last coin of the night I'm posting. Getting tired and I ain't pushing it too much.

    Wikipedia copy and paste history.

Glad you're back Gil. Your coins tonight have been interesting. At least someone is posting on here. Thanks. BTW, the portrait on this latest coin is pretty darn nice. It seems Siscia was really pumping out the coins around this period of time. I'd like to take another trip back to Croatia and have some free time to visit Sisak again. I met a couple of locals there that were doing metal detecting, but I didn't have any free time to go with them. Next time, eh?

Yeah, Siscia was pumping out so many coins that they started getting really sloppy and low quality. lol

That would be awesome to go to Croatia and hang out there with some coin hunting friends. Don't pass up the opportunity the next time!

It wasn't a matter of passing up anything. I was there for work and then had to move on to Prague for another week of work. Just no time built in for something like that. I did get to look around a couple of markets where the locals shopped (not for tourists). A few stalls selling some bonzes but not much I wanted although the prices were right.

Yeah, that sucks when work takes up all your time. Yes, by all means avoid the tourist areas for coin shopping. I've learned that from you guys. If I ever go to Europe, I won't be getting any coins from those crooks. I do know how to spot most obvious fakes by now though so I might do ok there.

Coincidentally, this coin happens to be my very "first" ancient coin purchase, so this coin has a special place in my heart/collection ...
