Hi guys, I picked this bad boy up a few months ago and am now just getting around to posting it here. I really wonder why they discontinued production of these after 367? Also I wonder what the relation between AE-1's and Solidii and Siliquae were? So many questions with so few answers! Valentinian I Obv: D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG. Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: RESTITVTOR REPVBLICAE (sic) / SMNΓ. Valentinian standing facing, head right, holding labarum and crowning Victory on globe. RIC 7a.3 var. (rev. legend). Condition: Very fine. Weight: 7.54 g. Diameter: 27 mm. Please post any coins that you think are relevant.
Nice coin and good portrait. Here are a couple of mine: VALENTINIAN I AE3 OBVERSE: D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG, diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE, Victory advancing left, holding wreath & palm, TESA in ex. Struck at Thessalonica 364-7 AD 2.4g, 17mm RIC 18a, LRBC 1706 VALENTINIAN I AE3 OBVERSE: D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG, diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: GLORIA ROMANORVM, emperor dragging captive by hair & holding labarum, officina letter and SIS (or ..SISC) in ex Struck at Siscia 364-375 AD 1.8g, 17mm RIC 5a
A nice specimen. Did you buy that in unrestored condition or as is? I am just getting into this great hobby and trying now to restore some coins myself. Just received some dirty lots and I cannot believe how small some of these are. And what are the AE #'S, does that refer to size??
Yes. Many coins will be referred to as "AE__" (insert diameter, i.e., AE 19). However, in LRBs, coins are divided into four categories: Ae 1, 2, 3, 4, with AE1 being the largest and AE4 the smallest. Here is a link explaing it better than I can: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/acmsize.html
Does the reverse really say "Restorer of the Republic"? That was a bold claim, but then again, Valentina I is probably the last Roman Emperor who could make a claim like that without it seeming like pure propaganda Nice coins !
Nice size. Mines alot smaller but bigger then other Æ3 I had. http://s10.postimg.org/enyzhf9qh/valen.jpg Valentinian I (364 - 375 A.D.) Hey, congrats Mag-Max => nice OP-addition Yah, I always get all misty-eyed whenever Valentinian-I gets posted => this was my very first ancient coin purchase ("the first one is free" states the drug dealer) => it reminds me of good times with you cool folks!!
Nice V1 and great capture duuuuude... Roman Imperials Valentinian I 364-375 CE Emperor dragging captive (I think he is dragging @Magnus Maximus ) XP Standard Sisca mint
The real Magnus Maximus would have had you strangled with your entrails for saying that. Love yah my Roman Repub friend!
LOL !!, literally. That quote fits perfectly. I just purchased my first ancient coin a little over 2 weeks ago. And after promising myself to learn more before another purchase.......6 more. It's gotta be the pictures on all these Ancient coin threads pulling me in.
Welcome to the "Dark Side"... and when your REALLY get hooked... It is a Stephen Hawking's explanation of a stellar BLACK HOLE!
Rather dramatic don't you think? I rather think of it in the vernacular of my youth: "Neat". It's just plain neat to own and handle pieces of history, some older than Christ. And if neat were a virus there is no cure.
