Thanks in advance for help. From a bulk lot. Pretty sure it's Valens, because I can make out [...] ALEN on the left and there is just enough smudges on the right to be consistent with [SPFAVG]; moreover, the portrait looks like Valens. Exergue is TESΓ without any dots; no stars, wreaths, etc. in the field on the reverse. I think it's RIC ix, p. 176, 16b, but it seems a bit small and underweight. Could I be misattributing the coin? Valens (?), AD 364-378 Roman AE centennionalis (?); 16.4 mm, 1.52 gm Thessalonica, AD 364-367 (?) Obv: [DN V]ALEN-[SPFAVG], diademed, draped [and cuirassed?] bust, right Rev: GLORIA ROMANORVM, Emperor advancing right, with right hand dragging captive and holding labarum in left; in exergue, TESΓ Refs: RIC xi, p. 176, 16b (?), Cohen 11 (?), RCV 19748 (?)
I can't imagine looking at enough coins to nail that one. The bag o Romans has about 10-15 coins in that condition that I'm struggling with. The good news is the time I've spent with the Constantine I, II, Constantius, etc has paid off and they're getting easier. Hopefully, as time goes the rest will as well.
After you've looked at several hundred LRBCs in such lots, it gets easier for sure. Have you seen tesorillo.com? There's a great page there for identifying LRBCs.
Yep, I use tesorillo.com. Wildwinds.com, augustuscoins.com and a few others. At times, I go through the pages even when I'm not trying to attribute a coin. History has been a passion of mine since I was five years old so the history attached to coins plays on that and makes me want to learn more. Thanks for the suggestion- I am always willing to listen to those who are more experienced. All the while trying not to be an information sucker. That's why I post what the bag o Roman coins with what I believe to be the attribution instead of just asking. And I also don't want to hijack your thread
