of this '89 MS 66 for type? http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=211021&Lot_No=20812&Lot_Id_No=8467 I'm not sure I'll pull the trigger on it, but I can't see anything wrong with this coin. The reserve is no bargain but it's CAC'd and looks PQ or nearly so to me. No bidders so far; am I missing something? PS: I do see a slight bit of tarnish inside the date and around the stars but that's all. Sharp but not perfect strike.
Looks good to me, and I'm someone who looks at NGC's 66s with a jaundiced eye. That said, if I were looking for a type coin in 66, I would NOT try and go at Heritage auctions alone. I would either have the coin viewed for me, view it myself, or simply ignore it and wait for a dealer (who provides a strong return policy) to offer one I liked. These are not rare coins, and I see no reason to take a chance on a $1.5k coin at auction sight-unseen, IMO. But hey, maybe that's just me!
Thanks for your comment, Mike (if I may call you that); I always appreciate your insights. Unfortunately, this is an internet auction, so I can't call up Heritage and have the coin pulled. Too late anyway. In the past they've been very fair and accurate in describing coins to me; I haven't been disappointed. If I could, and liked what I heard, I'd not have serious doubts about offering a bid. To my eye this piece might be good enough to cross. I can't see what would keep it from doing so. But the "might" might be what's keeping the interest away. Of course you don't get a great sense of luster from the photos. You're right, they're not rare, but I've been looking for a long time for just the right combo of qualities in both an N/C and W/C and I still haven't found the right pieces. This is the best 66 I've seen in a while. I'll more than likely pass but it's good to get feedback; thanks again. David
As one who looks at NGC 66s with a jaundiced eye, what do you think of this N/C? http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1152&Lot_No=7620&Lot_Id_No=204037
