Anyone try to get on the US Mint? I had not planned to buy anything, but wanted to see the status of new releases. The site is unavailable. Anybody have similar experience?
American Silver Eagle reverse-proof set, mintage 125,000, household limit 1. Which means every dealer and many flippers are getting all their family, friends, and neighbors to pound the site to death. It'll be better later on.
Easy solution: collect old coins and forget the ultra-modern stuff. Many of the mints that struck the stuff I collect have been in ruins for centuries- if not millennia- and they don't have websites. Their technicians and customer service reps are long, long dead.
The emperor's people sacked Doug from his customer service role after he was grouchy to some wealthy and influential tribune. Doug wasn't takin' no guff off the guy. Didn't care who he was.
Seriously, re. my point above- I like a shiny modern coin as much as anyone. I'm not one of those "all moderns are trash" kinda folks. But only once (in 1992, with the Columbus quincentenary halves), did I ever order directly from the Mint. Freeing oneself from the need to have the newest, hottest thing is liberating. You don't fall into these little speculation frenzies and bubbles. If you buy modern mint products, it's on the aftermarket, after prices have settled (and usually depreciated). I do feel a tiny bit of sympathy for the folks encountering the woes described here, but I'm largely aloof from all that, and rather glad of it (can you tell?)
I just spent an hour and fifteen minutes struggling with that AWFUL website. Was signed in early, ready to go...had it in my cart within 10 seconds, hit submit...and the entire thing crashed down around me. I got SO CLOSE to getting in and out before everything went down. In the end, I was successful - because I refused to give up - so my frustration is dissipating. But man, the Mint should realize the amount of negative experience they are truly earning with this nonsense.
Someone should send their customer service brass and their webmaster(s) a link to this thread, perhaps. Beware the Rage of the Nerds! (*It should be said that I wear my own nerd badge proudly.)
Checked just now and have no issue putting one of the sets in my cart and going through check out. Now, I'm not gonna spend $175 on 2oz of silver...but yeah that has to have been the quickest I've ever made it through the mint's website.
Took me 50 minutes total. Worst I've seen it since they implemented the new procedures to help prevent exactly what happened today, and I would say it was just as bad an ordering experience as the Morgan 2021 CC back in May, that kicked off all these new safeguards. I placed the order successfully 3 times, only to have the confirmation page blow up. I probably manually entered my credit card info 5 times, but mostly it was "bad gateway" between every step of the way, after login, after going to cart, after entering CC details, after confirmation, etc. Terrible, but in the end I *think* I got an order through. Sorry for those who did not, or gave up at the 30 minute mark. Clearly, the USMint needs to invest even more money and thought into this process. They need to get like Black-Friday/ Prime Day level capacity for these big drops.
What kind of fantasy times do you live in where the US Mint cares about their customer experience enough to make meaningful changes? Haha...
