Discussion of the so-called "barbarous radiates" pops up here from time to time. While researching a related topic, I stumbled upon this article from the good folks of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme. Well worth a read. https://finds.org.uk/counties/blog/coin-relief-issue-nineteen/
Terrific article. Many thanks, dltsrq. I for one need to take more advantage of the articles on that website. (...And the UKDFD.)
Read that article all the way the end where it gives good advice for all our studied of regular, irregular and questionable issues. "One day someone will write the typology for barbarous radiates. But, in the meantime, keep recording them, keep photographing them, and remember that these are products from a specific place in time – they’re not always as bad or uninteresting as they first might seem!"
I just came across this article today and was about to post it, but a search showed me I'd been beaten to it, so I'll bump this instead. If you're interested in the topic of 'barbarous radiates', it's essential.
