I am considering sending in about 10 coins for grading. These coins are not for the price, for sentimental value and I have always wanted to get them graded. Some are foreign and some are US, but all older than the 1950s. Should I use NGC or PCGS? Their prices are about the same, but NGC holders look nicer to me and they have much better customer service I hear. PCGS coins trade at a higher premium if I was ever to sell them though, or should I just go for NGC?
If it's purely for sentimental value... use ANACS. You will save some money by not having to join a "collector's club" or submitting through a dealer. If you're concerned with more than sentimental value: I think you just answered your own question there. =)
I go with NGC and for one main reason. I don't like the overvalued pcgs price guide that to many people think reflect true market value of their coins. Probably a dumb reason, they are both top tier, I just prefer NGC.
Ok, thank you all, I was thinking of ANACS but their slabs are not as good looking and I would like more accurate grades. I feel NGC would be the best for my case.
Could you post some photos? Could you post photos & your grade opinion of the coins you want to have slabbed? BTW, I am also in Connecticut & attend our local shows. Do you attend any of the shows in Naugatuck, Hartford, West Haven, East Haven, Danbury, etc? We should meet sometime. P.S. I too like the white color NGC holders.
I would love to attend shows, but I don't have enough information on them, it would be great if you could meet me at one! Here are some pictures: These are the foreign coins I wish to send. I would find one more to do the 5 minimum price.
To be quite honest none of those coins are worth sending in to get graded. The grading fees alone would cost more than the coins do. You can put them in Air-Tites or a snap-lock holder and that will protect just as well as a slab will.
I think you should do what you want to do. If the coins were mine, I would not have them graded. If I wanted them graded, I would go with the lowest cost provider given the value of the coins, and in the case of your coins, I believe that provider is NGC.
I know that grading them is not worth it, but for the sentimental value, it is worth the fees. And the 1939 E is worth more than the fees, it's one of the series better dates.
Those are nice coins from Germany & Russia. In fact the early one from the Weimar Republic looks really nice. The German coins probably catalog for about $20 each and the Russian piece catalogs for about $3. The only reason to have them slabbed may be for their sentimental value. You might consider buying CoinWorld plastic slabs or one of the other home slabs that are available. Of course, the coins would not be third party graded but they would be encapsulated with your label (for a small fraction of the cost of sending them to NGC). [Sorry it took more than 30-minutes for me to finish this reply because I had some interruptions]
I hear you sir, but you do not need to slab them with a TPG to have them protected. Protection is the main need I would think if they have sentimental value to you, and Doug's suggestion is what I would recommend as well. But, if you want them slabbed, that is your right. Chris
They are all in Air-tites right now. I think I'll have NGC slab them, not only for protection, also for fun. Will be some expensive fun though... Thanks for your opinions!
I would go with NGC. Better customer service by far than PCGS. PCGS tends to treat its customers rather shabbily, IMO.
Since it is the sentimental value that is most important to you, it doesn't matter a whit about the numismatic value. I'm in the same situation. I have 20 of the "Brown Ikes" that my parents gave me in the 70's, and I decided to submit them to NGC at FUN 2012. I could care less about the value, but the nice thing is that NGC will grade them in the original GSA case just like they do for GSA Morgans. Go with NGC. I think those coins will look very nice in the EdgeView holder. Chris
