I don't know much about alle the varieties in the USA coins, so I turn to the real experts, for their opinion...
I found this coin in a collection I have bought. I think it should be a 1941 without mintmark, but something happened to the last 1. I don't think it is damage because their is clearly material in a place were it shouldn't be. You opinion please???

looks to me that it's 1941 D as well, definitely post mint damage. Either someone was trying to mess with it in order to resell it as an "error" at one point it's life, or could have been caused by clashing and banging with other coins or objects.

good Lincoln cent sites are www.lincolncentresource.com or www.coppercoins.com

There are alot like that,so it is a possibility there was something wrong with the die, there has been no real determination as to the cause

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

I would guess a coin counter damaged that coin, as well as those that look similarly.

I would love to know what plausible explaination you have for what would have happened to the die to "fill in" the original "1" and then cut the misplaced "1" into the die.

If you can't explain how it happened on the die and there is a reasonably easy explaination as to how it happened outside the mint then it is post mint damage and nothing more.

here's a more modern rolling machine damaged coin with the gouge in a different location but it shows what I have been talking about
