Toured US Mint last week in Philadelphia. I thought it was a nice tour. Very informative and they had a lot of illustrations about the process of making coins.
Not sure how many folks know this, but Ben Franklin's grave is right across the street from the Mint. Ironically, folks passing by throw coins that were probably made across the street on his tomb. This is literally how close they are...
Yes. They had a display of Hobo nickels. Thought it was cool that they recognized hobo nickels and even gave credit to some of the more popular artists of the past.
Christ Church Burial Ground. 4 signers of the Declaration of Independence, and many of the most prominent early Philadelphians, are buried there. It's tradition to toss pennies onto Franklin's grave.
Who are the 4 signers that are buried there? Also, I thought I read somewhere that you couldn't take any pictures inside the Mint? Am I just thinking about the BEP? Thanks!
I was there in 2007. Walked the neighborhood. Unfortunately did not get back into coins until 2008. Toured the old state house and visited the Liberty bell. Did not know Franklin was buried right there. Thanks for sharing.
I should have said (thought I wrote) 4 other signers aside Franklin: Francis Hopkinson, Joseph Hewes, George Ross and Dr. Benjamin Rush. In addition to a host of others important in the country's and Philadelphia's early history.
