Took a US Mint survey yesterday and this was one of the questions. What do you think? I said I would probably buy 1. The United States Mint is also considering producing a 24 karat Gold Walking Liberty Half Dollar Coin in 2016 for the 100th anniversary of the Walking Liberty design. The coin would feature the original Walking Liberty on the obverse and the original eagle design on the back (reverse). The coin would be ¾ of an ounce of gold. The price of this coin would be approximately $1,275. The coin will stay true to Adolph Weinmann's original design as a tribute to him. Note: Pricing for gold coin products is tied to the market price for one ounce of gold and can vary dependent upon changes in the market value. How appealing would the 24 karat Gold Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin be to you?
Sucks that they are selling 3/4 of an ounce for almost the price of an ounce...unless gold changes abruptly (likely) in two years...
Ya, I thought it was a little on the high side too but not off terribly for the margins the mint normally makes.
Why cannot they come up with a new and classic design? Is the present US mint that devoid of originality that they have to keep rehashing old designs like the Saint Gaudens $20, the WL half, the Buffalo nickel?
Heh. I was intrigued by the Kennedy gold half from the first hints of its release, but when I had it in hand, the design didn't have enough appeal to make me look past the flaws on my examples. With the WL design, I think I'd buy at least one to keep, and I'd be willing to overlook flaws like those I saw on the Kennedys. I really love that design. I sure wish, though, that they'd go to a finer frosting technique than the "tiny pebbles" laser-blasting they use now. If that texture ever starts growing on me, I hope I can find a cream to take care of the problem.
i think it would be better if they made 2016-dated Mercury dimes, Standing quarters and Walking liberty halves out of 90% silver
That is exactly I thought the US Mint was going to do. And yes, if such a centennial set of 1916-2016 Mercs, SLQs and Walkers were issued, I would be buying. Gold? Not so much, at least at this point.
I personally wouldn't want circulation strikes, but I would be all over proof strikes of 90% or pure silver on all three. Heck, why not throw in a Buffalo and wheat cent and sell as a throwback silver mint set. I can see the awesome marketing campaign in my mind as I sit here and type.
I would go for silver proofs also if they went back to the pre 2010 frost. The sand sculpture-looking frost they use now just obliterates too much detail, especially on smaller more detailed coins. The Merc would look horrid in it IMO. The issue with doing nickels and cents in silver is they don't have a source for silver planchets like the other three.
