I picked up a couple more Mint Sets today. A 1994 and a 1979. I am filling back all of the way to 1959 and with the exception of a few silver ones have gotten the better sets already. I am still looking for a 1967 that I like... Anyways, Does anyone else here collect or have a complete set of US Mint Sets?
wow! a lot more people than I thought, I am slacking!!! As with any set, I started by buying the key dates and I am now filling in the more common stuff. Does anyone have any advice for me on pitfalls to watch out for? I remember looking for a while before I found a 1970 small date set that I liked, and like I mentioned about still looking for a 67. Any problems with the silver sets? Are they pretty readily available?
I set aside every set I see in extremely high grade. I prefer sets with every coin gem but if there's even one coin that's run of the mill or substandard I don't save it. These sets are far easier to find than the odds would seem to indicate. The attrition on mint sets is staggering but the attrition on gem sets is far higher yet.
Yes, if you are going to buy a 81 clear S or a 79 clear S have it in hand before you pay for it, because some people thing they have a clear S and they do not.
It Just So Happens Oh yeah, one of my favorite topics. I am putting together mint sets starting with 1964 and going back. I love to collect silver year sets. Currently I have all the sets from the early 60's. I forgot to mention I'm collecting all BU coins for each set and they are are break outs, no original packaging. Now since the Philadelphia sets are easier and less costly, I have been focusing on them for the sake of my lack of finances. I have the following besides the 60's: 59P, 58D, 57P, 55P, 54D, 53D, 52D, 52P, 51P, 48P, 47P, 43P, 42P, 41P, 37P, 36P, 35P, 34P. The trick down the road will be to acquire the "S" coins to complete the sets. I also have a circulated set 1912P. This set was put together to commemorate my Grandfathers birth year. I plan to make this one BU as soon as I can afford to...I know that will cost me big...but is certainly doable. I started doing this to commemorate birth years for my family members. It took off from there and where it ends , well I don't see it ending as long as I can find the money to buy the coins. Allen
I have collected mint sets back to 59 and proof sets back to 56. I have personally purchased both my mint and proof sets directly from the mint since 86. Other than the no S sets, the only one I don't have is the 1981 type II. The 1979 type II is the only set I have outside the orignial mint packaging. If you saw my post from this weekend, I went after the 55, 56, 57, & 58 mint sets in OMP and 54 & 55 proof sets in OMP that were offered at a local coin auction. Just out of my price range. As cladking mentioned, there are many sub-par mint sets out there. I have found that many of the sets from the 70's are horrific and some from the 80's. I am trying to go back and upgrade the ones that are bad. Kinda hard though, because you don't know what you will get online and my local coin shop is very limited. I usually wait for the coin shows to come around to find choice sets. The key is to find the silver deep cameos!
Nope. Been selling them on Eb*y. Never looked at the mint or proof sets that I bought over the past 25 years. I don't need something I don't look at. -Andy
Figured I might as well try to put together a run from 62 to present, you know my lifetime. So my first purchase was....'57! go figure. I get the best I can find and then fill in for quality. Fun to me!
I just started collecting and have a complete 2007 silver, proof, and uncirculated I got from the US Mint. Also signed up for the subscription series. My first goal is to collect back to 1999, start of the State Quarter series. I have been underwelmed by the packaging of the uncirculated Denver, Philliadephia sets. The fold over cover seems fragile and I'm concerned about cracking the fold. I like shinny, shinny new and love looking at the coins.
