The obverse shot (1) is from the James Monroe coin, in hand, it appears as if he is Howdy Doody. The reverse shot is from the the same set but is the reverse of the Andrew Jackson coin. Originally, I thought the reverse shot was a machine oiling mark, but couldn't tell what was going on with the obverse shot. Now they look similar, maybe some oil got on them from the machine or; somebody spilled Pepsi on them Should I send them back or keep them, hoping for errors? Fred
Send them back, the mint will refund your postage also. There is a 1-800 number on their website call them. I sent some individual dollar proofs back a while ago.
I thought Proof sets were supposed to be "inspected", as they were assembled. Seems the Mint needs new inspectors. I have a 2004 proof set, and the SAC dollar has a easily seen die crack on the obverse.
These coins along with the Sac suffer issues with spotting. I don't think it would qualify as an error as there are too many cosmetic errors with these coins. Now the 2004 Proof Sac with a die crack mentioned above is probably worth keeping.
