I will try to get pics sometime. He probably bought it in the 80's. Most of his collection were bought in the 1970-2000 range. No idea when and where he bought them. He loved coins and has been buying them since the 1950's.
What most collectors refer to as "Classic Commems" were half dollars issued by the US Mint from 1892-1954. The Mint stopped issuing commemorative half dollars for 28 years and resumed the production of, what we call, "Modern Commems" from 1982 to date. Your Pilgrim Tercentenary half dollar was struck in 1920 (200,112) & 1921 (100,053).
He paid a good price coin is very nice but the rim dings would prevent it form straight grading if you were planning to get it certified.
Thanks. I wasn't planning on getting anything certified, but explain straight grading. Remember, I am new to this world.
Straight grading means it would be able to get into a grading service slab with no disclaimers such as "damaged", "corroded", "cleaned", "scratched" etc. With any disclaimers it is referred to as "Details" graded, without them it is said to be "straight" graded.
