Picture fresh of the press tinkering around with my equipment. Let me know what you guys think of the coin and the photography. Still not getting the sharpness I wish but I think that's an equipment issue.
It's a for circulation speical FAO issue with 1 mil minted. FAO is the world (Food and Agriculture Org.).90 silver and also struck in Copper as a pattern at 10k and in gold at 1k.
An interesting design indeed. The symbol underneath the country name, by the way, is the Sun of May (see the image at the bottom of that page) from the flag and CoA of Uruguay. Usually it is depicted is a less abstract style, but on this coin it looks very modern, just like the animals and food symbols on the other side ... Christian
Yeah its an art deco take on a classic design. The reverse has a cow and a sheep and some other kind of animal I cant quite make out. The 19th century coinage from Uruguay has a more traditional represenation of the Sun of May on m ost of its pieces. I will get more photos up of other issues as with my family being from Uruguay I collect some of these as a secondary interest. I have the copper version of the above coin as well that I will add photos of. I would like to one day own the gold release but even finding pictures of that one is tough!
Oh last bit is the die variety. They eye of the sun has a die break that gets this labled as "The Crying Sun" variety. There is obviosuly one without it as well though I do not know the mintages for each variety. Both of my Copper piece and a second silver piece also has the break which leads me to believe that the crying version is more abundant.
Yeah im not sure what it could be other than a lizard or gator but it was my impression that it was suppose to be animals that are eaten as food and from Uruguay that were put on there and I dont think gator or lizard would fit in with sheep and cow. So ive no idea what it is for sure.
Here is the same coin in bronze. This is my picture which isnt all there photographically speaking but this one was tough to shoot. There are some nice greens blues int he copper that I couldnt get. I was able to get the magentas pretty well though
And I should update some bad info I gave the first go around. The silver circulation mintage is 500k. There is also the bronze circ above with about 11k minted and the gold circ is 450 mint. There are 2 essais, silver at 10k minted and copper at 20k. There is also a proof silver at 1k minted and possibly a gold proof with 100 minted. I cant even find the gold in pictures but I WILL own one some day.
I also just added the no tear variety of the silver piece. If you look at the right eye in the very first pic there is a die marking which is called a tear. Its not in this one. The no tear appears to be the rarer of the 2 as every piece I have encountered until this one has been with the tear. (bad pic scan, not mine)
Another Newp in this series, a toner this time(better pictures to come once in hand). I have ammassed a lot of information on this coin. Namely what each design element is but I have to translate it from spanish. There's like 16 in total. For example the very center image on the obverse(not the sun) is suppose to signify the face of the creator(God):
Woot. I may have a lead on one of the silver proofs. Waiting for pictures. 350 total minted Here we go: 1: Face of the creator(God) 2: Square, an instrument for measuring right angles 3: The Universal Man (no race association, generic man) 4: An Eel, representing food from the sea 5: Yoke for Oxen 6: Seeds 7: Bird of prey and seed 8: Fruit bearing tree branch 9: Shovel 10: Float for a fishing net 11: Trough for carrying water and seed 12: Stakes for planting furit bearing trees 13: Ax 14: Farming fence 15: Bovine and seed 16: Lizard 17: Grain grinder
I dont think the sellers pic did this one any justice. Thank goodness for that. The rainbow looks like a hologram in hand.
Very nice looking coin! I just bought a Uruguay coin as well. It's not like yours but it's still really cool. I have coins from almost everywhere in the world but I didn't have one from Uruguay. Well now I do and it's a powerful one as well!!
That's a great design as well. I have a couple of those. There's a proof version with a different obverse that is verrrry sweet.
Made this for proof diagnostics thought it will only really help with damaged or impaired proofs as the matte fields versus mirrored fields are pretty obvious:
