I am having a contest to help add additional coin photos to

    http://www.mycoinpictures.com/index.php

There will be two (2) winners in this contest.

Winner #1 will get a 2001 Unc set (both P and D). The sets contain the state quarters. Half dollar and SAC with of course the penny (cent), nickel and dime. This will go to the person having the MOST approved numismatic photos.

Winner #2 will be a random pick based on number of approved numismatic photos. So if you submit 1 photo, you have one chance, If you submit 10 photos, you have 10 chances out of how many photos there are. Winner #1 is not eligible for this one. Winner will get a 1990 or 1995 mint set or some other comparable prize.

Not much, but then it is free.

    Rules: (Yes there are rules)

    1. In order to enter, you will need to register on that site. www.mycoinpictures.com. Registration is free, and I will never sell or give away your email address
    2. Photo must be cropped to avoid unnecessary white space. In other words, do not submit a photo where the coin is only a small part of the picture. The coin should take up most of the picture after cropping.
    3. Photo must be clear. No fuzzy stuff
    4. Photo must be placed in the correct category.
    5. Winner will be responsible for PM me your mailing address. I will pay for shipping, etc, yes even to a foreign country (if I can)
    6. I will be the final authority on winner eligibility. For example, if your photo is not clear, cropped, etc, then that photo entry may be void.
    7. Files should be gif, png or jpg and under 2 meg
    8. Contest ends Jan 31st.

Good luck. You can also post any questions in this thread.

OK, Thanks for the explaination on what is approved.

Next question; I just uploaded two pictures (I think) at the same time. Will two pictures come up or do they have to be uploaded seprately ? Also not sure if they are in the right catagory.

    Ok cool.
So whats the catch? Do you own the rights to the photo or something once I post 'em?

    Hi ! Morgan,

Thanks for your number 10 rating on the Buffalo Gold at the Bullion catagory. I just wish I could set it beside my computer to view it every day, but alas, it is locked up in my safe deposit box.

FG has a good point and I have been wondering also. Once the photo is on the site, would people be able to take it off and use it for their own purpose? Or do you intend to sell copies for coin books or such?

Can the photos be watermarked and still considered for the contest?

Can the photos be removed by the person putting it on at anytime?

    Thanks
    Jim

you can remove them by replacing them with something else....and he can delete them. pretty sure we keep the rights, but....could be wrong.

What would stop someone from doing that with pictures posted here on cointalk?

I registered but I'm gonna wait until I have some more questions answered about the use of the website in question.
Why couldn't we have just posted our photos right here on CT for this contest. It hasn't been fully explained why we need to uploade unfuzzy, specially cropped shots of our coins. Are they to be amassed and used somewhere else? Why all the restrictions on a "fun" contest?

Nothing of course, but without permission or implied use within the thread would amount to theft of original work, if used for other's personal use. Many have complained when their original photos show up on other's ebay listings. The wrong is on the thief.

My question is do I assign the rights to the photos to someone else by registering and posting on that site. If we do , then that is different, the "wrong" is on me.

I think everyone would like to know who is using their photos and for what purpose. I did check our FAQ and there is nothing there about the Forum's position on photo ownership. Probably any original content could be covered in one statement that it belongs to the original poster which I feel is the unstated position.

Not that my photos are all that great

Oh, I see what you mean. I know MVC though, and I don't think he has any bad intentions here.

yikes, just getting around to checking in.

I will try to answer the questions

Do I intend to sell the pictures? NO

Do I intend to use them for any purpose? No intent other than for educational purposes on that site and for people to enjoy

Why post them on www.mycoinpictures.com? I created the site to post pictures of coins for people to look at, view, enjoy, etc. with the hope that the images would be of sufficient size and quality to really show all the detail of the coin, wear, varieties/errors, etc. And while I do not have many, if any varieties/errors, my hope is that some will show up and that the images will really show the detail. Many forums, etc have a much smaller size limit on images which sometimes produce grainy, fuzzy or small pictures. Not saying that happens all the time, but on www.mycoinpictures.com the size is just under 2 meg which when taking a 7 meg picture and then cropped down, etc still provides a very large photo with great clarity (depending on the camera, photographer, etc)

who owns the pictures? I am not sure quite how to answer that. I believe that copyright laws apply. That does not prevent anyone from posting a link to any given pictures. As for the pictures I have posted, I do not care if they are used anywhere else. If they are, I would hope the user would credit the site

can I watermark them? A few images have been posted with the owners name/business in the corner of the image. No problem there. I would hope thought that any watermark would not distort/disrupt the details of the coin.

Once the photo is loaded can anybody take it? Yes, and that is no different than this site or any other site. It is the internet after all

Why all the restrictions on a "fun" contest. (fuzzy, etc) I just wanted to make sure that the pictures uploaded were of decent quality which would imply that the person uploading the image was not trying to upload anything and anything just to get a higher count.

Can I delete images? The system is not currently setup to do that for users but the admin account can, so there is a way to remove images.

OK, I think I answered them all. If I did not, or there are more, please let me know. Also, now with all that being said, if there is anyone who has uploaded images and would prefer I remove them, I will do so.

    Thanks

    Holding a Contest
Folks the reason the sticky for the contest rules is gone - is because there are no rules. The rules are left up to the person who decides to hold a contest - you get to make up your own rules

Each individual contest can have its own rules. Be creative if you wish, post questions that must be answered if you wish - or just allow everyone who enters to have a chance with a random drawing.

ANY Coin Talk member can hold a contest ANYTIME they want !

(I would just like to say who cares if some one uses your coin photo. 1 you still own the coin, 2 you can take another photo, 3 yes this is a contest and as per the contest rules there are none so I don't see why his motives are in question and 4 Just have fun its a contest, if you don't like his rules don't participate)

    Sincerely,
    Donn
