My quinarius has a place in my 12 caesars set, but I have wanted a anepigraphic denarius for the last year or so. I found this example of RIC 126 with the capricorn reverse from a seller on vcoins and I bought it. I will have it very soon as they will fed-ex it to me. Please feel free to post your coins of Augustus. My quinarius The capricorn reverse
Nice coins, both of them! Are you keeping the quinarius, too? Me too, someday. The hard/expensive ones are JC, Caligula, and Claudius in imperial silver, right?
Hi Paul, To be clear, I have all 12 in silver but only 75% of them are in VF or better condition. The other 4 are below VF. Yes, you are correct. JC is tough if you want a portrait denarius. They are out there but there is a lot of competition for them so prices are high. The toughest for me were the Caligula and Claudius. I have added a second Claudius denarius to my collection, but I am still on the hunt for a second Caligula in silver. Again, both Claudius and Caligula are available if you look for them but they will be costly. The other one that can cause some problems is the Otho. His coins are available but they can be very pricey. I was lucky, the first ancient coin I ever bought was the Otho in my avatar. I know a few dealers I trust and they are always on the lookout for denarii of JC, Claudius and Caligula. As far as I am concerned, one cannot have enough denarii of those three. Good luck with you own hunt. It is a fun journey. As for the quinarius, I will probably use it as trade bait.
Very nice, congrats! I've always wanted one of these with the Capricorn. I like this Spanish mint issue of yours quite a bit better than the later Lugdunum ones. Anepigraphic obverses are just classy. AUGUSTUS AR Denarius. 3.64g, 19.9mm. Rome mint, 19-18 BC, P. Petronius Turpilianus, moneyer. RIC 297 (R2). O: CAESAR AVGVSTVS, bare head right. R: P PETRON TVRPILIAN III VIR, Pegasus walking right.
Nice upgrade to the RECEPTA quinarius, and certainly a much scarcer type. That is a nice one, for sure. I have also thought about a nice Claudius or Caligula denarius, but the high prices keep my enthusiasm in check, for the moment at least. Also, I really want to upgrade my Germanicvs SIGNIS RECEPTIS dupondius first, and these are expensive enough due to demand. For the moment I am happy with my only Augustus quinarius:
I truly LOVE that quinarius!!! And your other example is quite nice too (seems like you already have some interested parties for it LOL). Terrific posts everyone! Well, Since I repeatedly posted my bronze, I guess I'll post the familiar Augustus and Gaius/Lucius denarius type I purchased from FORVM---and much nicer in hand.
Nice coins! *noob alert* 1. What is a "quinarius"? I'm assuming that's its denomination, but where does that fall into things (for example, in relation to a denarius)? 2. What is an "anepigraphic" coin? Are they rare in relation to others? 3. Are Julius Caesar coins expensive because he is so famous, so everyone wants one, or are they actually rare? Coming from the US side, it sounds like they are similar to 1909S-VDB Lincolns - basically anyone who wants to pony up can get one, but they are going to be expensive. Is this the right analogy?
A quinarius was half the value of a denarius. Denarius = 16 asses; quinarius = 8 asses. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Denomination Anepigraphic = without legends. I love the clean look of legendless coins I think you're basically correct. Most types aren't rare but everyone wants one.
@Orfew you are doing a great job pounding at your focus on the Seutonius Twelve! I love Quinarii, and BOTH of yours look great. However, fantastic capture on your newest one! Thanks for the kind words. I like the Gaius/Lucius denarius very much. Yours is a scarcer variety because it has the right shield in front of the left shield.
Thanks for the kind words. I love your denarius. The portrait style is fantastic and the reverse is just as interesting.
