There may not be any bargains to be had but this might be an interesting auction to attend. March 29 in Newcastle, ME.

UNRESERVED MULTI ESTATES RARE COIN AUCTION

And on, and on, and on.

You know that professional dealers probably have pre-sale privliages and will pick out the best. There's little chance that the little guy will find any bargains here. When I think estate sale I think of someone up the street who died and their home and all its belongings are put up for sale just to liquidate them.

This is probably the biggest auction ever in Maine..I can't buy at auctions anymore. People are crazy at auctions. They bid higher then they are worth, and by the time you pay the tax and buyers premium about 15-20% forget it.

I know what you mean, Ed. I have heard about people bidding up super common circulated Indian $2 1/2 to over $500. The mentality seems to be "It's old. It's gold. So it has to be worth a LOT."

I'd say that 1798 dollar is probably a fake.

Believe me, I'm no authority on Bust Dollars, but FWIW:
The nose, the "8" in the date, and the mouth look suspicious when I compare it to a photo of an authentic piece.

For as well struck as it is, and as high a grade as it appears to be the denticals are oddly very weak. And what is with that raised fin that goes most of the way around the coin at the edge? These dollars were struck without close collars. A fin like that can't occur from striking. The picture is not good but when blown up and lightened it does seem to show some a couple other features that are seen on other known counterfeits.
