Korea. 1882-1883 Tae Dong Royal Treasury silver 1, 2 and 3 Chon. Enameled "Hu" in reverse. Scarce and rare condition with full intact enamel. A failed attempt to modernize the Korean coinage in response to global trade demands. However many were hoarded by the royal nobles and often in rough blistered surfaces due to them being cast and surface melting from being fired on to melt the enameled glass. Comes in 3 standard colors namely black, blue and turquoise. Rare conditioned with original enamel largely intact.
Thanks.. I'm not sure why they did it but it does make it more appealing than just a plain silver piece
Those are really neat looking. Sort of reminds me of the ancient bronze coins of Axum that have a little gold "plug" in them.
Oh yeah.. that was perhaps the first attempt at bimetallic coin minted. I got an incredible specimen from @Ancientnoob
At risk of (temporary) digression from the present topic, I'd love to see it. I have managed to never have one one of those. I did find some enameled (red and/or blue) cash coins in a bulk lot once, but I don't suppose that was done in any kind of official capacity.
Sure.. Africa, Ethiopia Kingdom of Axum (600-631 AD) King Armah (Ashama Ibn Abjar) Gold Gilt AE Unit. In exceptional condition. Ex @Ancientnoob This was the king of Abbisynia who according to Islamic accounts granted asylum to the Prophet Mohammad who fled from Mecca when persecuted by the pagans during his early preaching. Thus he was remembered in Islamic tradition in a positive light and legend
I love it. Nice patina. That would be an appealing ancient bronze based on its eye appeal and history alone, but with the gold "splasher" in there ... well... wow.
Yeah!! I was real proud of this piece, better than the specimen in the British museum.. I have to thank @Ancientnoob For that.. haha
Lovely chon. I picked up a 3? chon out of a random box of bargain coins in cardboard flips recently. I have no idea of value or street value, but I'm thinking I did quite well for $3? The enameled center, plus the overall look jumped right out at me.
Really? Wow! That is probably my best buy ever. I guess I'll get it out of the cardboard flip and into something more appropriate...
