Hi Gang, This is my first post with Coin Talk. I wanted to say hi and I thought I would throw up a couple of pics of recent find. It's a 1947-S Lincoln and the mintmark caught my attention. Any opinions? thanks Rock

Hi and WELCOME :hail: to the forum. There were two different mintmarks used in 1947, the Serif S and the Sans Serif S. Yours closely resembles the Sans Serif with what looks to me to be some post mint damage. Lets see what others say.

It does look like the sans serif , but it looks inverted to me.

I agree that it looks to be san serif and the inverted look is what caught my eye.

thanks for the welcome. I believe it to be san serif and perhaps it is post mint damage but it doesn't appear to be at close range. But I don't know. Probably better odds of that than it being inverted.

I would say it's an inverted MM

I ran a google search on Lincoln inverted mintmarks a couple of days ago and hardly anything showed up except a few things talking about the 1946-S. CONECA, Lincoln Cent Resource, Chuck Daughtrey's new book review were about it on the subject. There was a supposed 1945-S inverted mintmark sold on ebay for $7.50 recently but thats all that showed up there. It's got my curiosity up for sure.
    thanks,

I'm curious as to what this is on the 'S'. Is it a die chip or damage? Without it, it would not look inverted.

I took another look under a 20x loupe and the area circled by Rockdude has a small ding. If you look at the MM, the bottom part is more rounded with heighth, where the middle and upper part is flat looking. I'm wonder if it were hit, flatting part of it to give an appearance of being inverted. On the other hand, I'm not ruling out that it is inverted because if it is damaged, it's not very blatant. I'm going to look thru my piles and try to find more 47-S to compare it with.

Here is another pic. I't not the best as I don't have any magnification on it other than a straight camera shot.

Here's a 'S' from different angles, it might help. Yours does look inverted.

interesting. the 2nd pic looks just like mine except the small ding is a little further to the end. I'm beginning to believe it might just be inverted. Are you pics a 1946 or 1947?

A 1947S, it's the same coin, one shot upright the other inverted.
