I am not a coin collector. I am using this forum in hopes that someone can help me identify a coin we just found. It is a nickel, and has a buffalo on one side. The other side has a head shot of a man (I do not recognize the man). He is wearing an old style hat. I can send photos by email if anyone needs that to help. Thanks a lot.
Unfortunately the year is unreadable. It is not a hobo nickel. I checked an internet picture of the 2 hobo nickels and mine does not match them.
There are more than 2 hobo nickel designs - they number in the thousands. There is even an artist today who carves them continually making new designs. It sounds like that's what you have.
I have added the picture. I agree, it is probably a hobo nickel. I have seen several pictures that are similar.
Thanks for the fast replies. Is this coin worth more than 5 cents? Is there a site on the internet that shows the "modern hobo nickels"?
I saw a dealer at the Vegas coin show last weekend with dozens of them for sale - $5 each. As for a web site - not sure. But a Google search should turn one up if it exist.
Here is a link with a coint that looks VERY similar to yours: http://www.carvednickel.com/pages/1/index.htm You can even buy more if you want -Bobby
While hardly an expert on the subject there are some which I'd recognize and would be interested in seeing the picture. cladking@netzero.com
Kit,this engraved coin reminds me of the Kruger coins of the South African Republic where someone added a hat & a smoking pipe to Kruger's portrait as a form of 'Trench Art'.
Check this out - http://www.hobonickels.org/? A whole socety of Hobo Nickel collectors and their works. Lots of expertise here.
I too have one but the man isn't wearing a hat this man has slicked back hair and also my coin is not dated..
Sounds like a Hobo Nickel. Hand carved by a hobo. The man probably has a beard as well. Welcome to CT.
