Unopened Proof set envelopes a scam?

I heard that all those proof sets in unopened envelopes have been sealed after being examined. It seems, I was told, that the US Mint sent these out to the buyers opened with the COA inside. I'm talking 5o's and 60's proof sets. These sets sell for a few more $ on ebay than the opened ones but claim " may have a $25,000.00 half dollar in it". Or some such claim. So, I'm asking, Did these proof sets come opened, originally, and we're being scammed to think no one ever looked at them after they left the Mint? Or were they shipped out from the US Mint sealed.

I am not sure but I believe they were sent unsealed when sent from the mint.

The indivual proof set envelopes were not sealed. But all you need for them to be sealed was alittle humidty & time. So to be sure that the sets have not been searched you need to buy a sealed from the mint box of proof sets. I forget how many sets come in a box, but I think it was 50.
Perhaps someone who knows for sure can chime in.

Are you certain of that ?

I wouldn't pay a huge premium because I think they can be resealed easily enough. They must have been sealed in order to be offered that way now. I recall these being sold that way 25+ years ago, as well.

I recall ebay sellers selling proof set envelopes in bulk from time to time. Any flavor from 1954 to 64.

I guess they would be fairly easy to make.

wasn't 55 the 1st year of the sealed plastic envelopes, and earlier sets usually wind up in a capital holder ?

There were issued unsealed. However, they sealed very easily with a little humidity.

The shipping boxes had different numbers of sets in them. It all depends on how many a person ordered. I've personally opened sealed boxes from 5 to 100 sets.

So total BS on unopened sets, then ! I've seen them opened with a letter opener, but if they sealed themselves, I'm sure you could get it open, check for cameos, and reseal convincingly enough.

    The myth is busted !

i actually purchased 4 of the "unopened" sets from a regular coin world advertisemer. they were the cheap ones 1961-64. i would not do it again as it is simply gambling to me. they were average looking but 1 had a carbon spot on the half. i asked if they would exchange and the answer was no. i'll stick with seeing the coins i purchase. perhaps others have had better success..........
