excuse me for being a novice in this feild of study, but i have a coin that i cant match with ones on the web. i know it would be easiest to go to someone, but its something you want to know about asap. my description.... 1890 coin, NO denomination at all. a little bit (a few mm) smaller than the current dime looks to be copper. one side(dont know how to determine front or back) eagle looking to left, sheild on chest, right claw is grasping three arrows, left claw grasping what looks to be an olive branch??? directly underneath the eagle on the very bottom-middle is the year "1890" around the perimeter of the coin reads "united states of america" other side..... Very simple and not too detailed a very small ( ball point of a pen size) 6 pointed star at the top-middle around the coin are two seperate wheat(?) branches or twigs on either side and in the very middle is an outline of a circle with a very tiny dot in the middle of it which is not any bigger than the period thats ending this sentence. if you have taken your time to try to interpret this description, thanks!
Wait, if you say there is no denomination, isn't it likely to be a token? Not too sure about US coinages as I personally don't collect them, but others might be ablt to tell you. But please, if you can post a picture, it will most certainly help us identify. Pictures do tell more than 1000 words.
Hi texburleson and welcome to the forum. What you have sound to be a token because of two thing you said about the item you have. One: that the date, the eagle and the words United States of America are on the same side. I am not an expert on every coin but every coin I have seen with the exception of the State Quarters has the date on the Obverse (front) and the words United States of America on the Reverse (back) along with the denomination which you said that your item does not have. And Two: If the date is only on the Obverse then the only US coin that has an Eagle on the Obverse is an Flying Eagle Cent which does not have a sheild on it. I think this is a token. That coin does not match any of the regular issue coins for that time frame. And as far as i know every coin except the silver three-cent piece had their denomination on it. And the last one of them was minted in 1873. So it has got to be a token of some kind.
