I'm trying to figure out what on earth this is. It's obviously hammered, and appears to date from the Middle Ages to Renaissance era. The obverse shows a bare headed & mustachioed man facing to the right. The reverse shows a crest topped by a crown.

I struck out on English monarchs. Odds are that this is Polish or Lithuanian or from a Duchy so obscure that I would never even think to look it up. Any ideas where to start on ID'ing this?

Here's a handy guide to British monarchs on coins (for future reference):

I also found these sites handy in finding out who ISN'T on my coin:

Looks like an 8 or 16 marevidis minted under Phillip IIII of Spain. The reverse has the Spanish coat of arms.

You have an excellent eye and memory for detail. Looks like you nailed it.

The 16 is clearly visible to the right of the crest (and there's a curved top over the crown, which is on the 16, but not on the 8), making it a 16 maravidis. And the tail end of the date (a "2") is also clear, which I believe makes this a 1662 Spanish 16 Maravedis of Felipe IV.
