I purchased this coin on eBay a few years back, but completely forgot what it is. From what I recall, it's some sort of Germanic coin, maybe early Medieval. The coin measures 13mm on its longest side, and has a very thin planchet. Does anybody happen to know what this is? Bonus points if you can tell me what the design is.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Never seen anything like that before.

Are you sure it was supposed to be a coin?

Moved from World to Ancients. Not sure how old this is, but we do not have a clearly defined cut-off date anyway. And those folks may be more familiar with odd looking lumps of metal. ;)

Wow... that could be almost anything... but the size and appearance remind me of photos I've seen of 13th century Bavarian pfennings and the 12th - 15th century coins known as "handhellers," though I don't think it's either one of those. Interesting challenge.

ewomack is right i think. the obverse shows markings similar to my coin (obverse is right)...

this is a holy roman empire coin from the early 13th century. any, those marks with a straight edge and loss of peripheral devices were made by how they hammered the coin. they one strike one side, then flip and strike the other. you only really see that in this period and from this area (as far as i know).
