I recently got a pm in collectors corner on yahoo, someone was trying to figure out what this coin was, I was no help, so I will post the description here, from how she described it, please any info. this coin is the size of a nickel...nickel color...with a few building on the front..they are tall with spiral tops on them...on teh back is a young man with short hair and glasses....there is writing on it but it is not english...one of the words may be, w.a bemm or h.a bemm...it also says @1 URN.. well its sorta a backwards r... lots of symbols for letters on back..no date
99.99% probability that it is from Thailand, but that general description covers several different coins. A picture is essential for accurate attribution. Most such coins are very common and of nominal value, even uncirculated. Most likely either 1 salung or 25 satang (equal to 1/4 baht and slightly smaller than a U.S. nickle), or 50 satang (1/2 baht and slightly larger than the nickle) Just because you can't read Thai numbers doesn't mean there is no date on the coin. This is a good reminder that English is not the only language on world coins, and the Roman alphabet/arabic numbers combination are not the only characters used for inscribing coins. (In fact, what we call "arabic" numbers are substantially different from the numbers actually used in modern Arabic-speaking nations.)
Sounds like the Thai 1 Baht type used 1986-97 (Y-183). The date in Thai is the second line of text to the right of the temple and would be Buddhist era 2529-2540. You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
"Just because you can't read Thai numbers" This was the description from someone on yahoo, I was curious as well, this is her description, not mine, I hope she actually takes the time to read the posts that this brings though....Thanks
