Unknown ancient coin, may be a fake

    Hey folks,
As some of you already know I know next to nothing about ancients. Recently got this one and I'm not sure what to make of it.
On the one hand the patina looks ok, just a bit shallow. On the other, the edge looks like it has filing marks, which I'm aware is often the case when casting seems were filed off on copies.
Not sure what it's made of, but it's very slightly magnetic depending on how you orient the magnet.
Also, I have no idea what type it's supposed to be.

Any help is appreciated, thanks! =)

Yeah, I don't like it either. Way too many symptoms of a fake. The porosity, gross unevenness of the edges, the file marks on the edges, the softness of the details, any of them individually could be normal, taken as a whole screams cast copy fake. Having a slight magnetism seals it, since that is very rare in authentic coins.

It looks like a copper copy of a Tetradrachm. Btw, even with the file marks, see the casting seem still on the edge? This seem is very hard to obliterate completely.

Thanks for the confirmation Chris. I didn't notice an actual seem on the edge. Some parts almost have facets to them with angular lines, such as in the edge pic to the right of the imperfection in the center.

I give you ancient coin collectors a lot of credit. Seems too complicated to me when dealing with stuff that old.

I agree. Nothing looks right with this coin. The coin's surfaces have the look of a fake. And it does look like a casting seam on the edge that someone tried to hide by filing the edge.

Thanks Hobo. I actually thought the surfaces looked ok. Good thing I don't buy or sell ancients. =)

Also look at the edge where it's sharp , chances are a coin if it were real and that used would be worn and be more rounded . Too many ands ifs and buts .

Look at the pic of the edge of the coin. Just right of center, see the horizontal line? This color difference indicative of casting is many times impossible to remove. They can file away the metal, but many times there will be this colored line. The first thing I look at if I am suspicious is look at the edge at a distance, and see if I can make out this horizontal line.

Fakey-wakey - looks like a (poorly) cast copy of an ancient or perhaps even a fantasy piece.

The source piece was a silver stater of Lokris Opuntii, fyi.

Thanks! I thought the coin looked familiar, but not being a big greek silver guy, I couldn't place it off the top of my head.
