United States: 1927 gold Saint-Gaudens double eagle ($20.00)

    PCGS MS66. Cert. #73263326.

    Numista-23126, Krause-Mishler-131.

    Mintage: 2,946,750.

Ex-Michael Swoveland, dba WNC Coins, LLC, Asheville, NC, 31 July 2024. purchased in the slab.

The double-eagle (gold $20) coin designed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful US coin designs. This year, 1927, is one of the more common dates, but is at least slightly less common than several of the other dates from the 1920s; particularly the 1924 and 1928.

I acquired this coin by trading in a PCGS MS64 1923 $20 which had cost me $2,200 the year before. My friend Michael, the dealer, added an upgrade fee of $550 to step up to this coin, so my total investment in this piece is $2,750. Considering it now catalogs for $5,000 as of this typing (March 2026), and has a melt value nearly equal to that, I'd say my timing was pretty lucky. I got in before the record surge in gold prices.

Vey nice ! I have a 1904 I bought on a whim about 4 years ago wringing my hands all the way home over the, at that time, hugely extravagant price of $1600, along with some other gold coins. Besides a good investment, it's a privilege to own such a magnificent piece . The price of gold these days is just a happy afterthought.

I can still vividly being a young collector ogling over $400.00 St. Gaudens and wondering if I would ever have that kind of money!
