I am moving at the end of the month, and am not sure about the area. For security reasons, I want to keep my coins at a storage facility and am wondering how I need to store them. I live in the Memphis TN area where it is hot and humid during the summer. I guess climate controlled storage is probably preferred, but lets assume I am unable to locate any in my area. What would you folks suggest. Thanks for your help!!
Well you can put them at the bank but I have heard that if you lose them...you lose them and they don't help a bit...but also they don't have the best climate either. If you live near a good friend I would see if he would keep them for a day or two. Speedy
If the options listed above become exhausted, and your back to storage rental, I'd buy a few of the army ammo boxes. Their very tough, they don't scream "COINS IN HERE", and if you get a newer one (ebay is a good source) with the rubber gasket seal still in good shape, it will be airtight/watertight. I've also seen mechanisms that can be found on ebay for locking down an amo box with a pad lock. If your still worried about the humidity, you can also find some of the moisture absorbtion bags on ebay, or at your local gun shop, harware store, etc., and put one in each box. When you put these in storage, try to put them somewhere in the middle of the "pile". It will help to keep it dryer and cooler. Hope this helps. P.S Another great source for ammo boxes is your local Army/Navy store, though they tend to be double/triple the cost of ebay.
You darn well better be worried about humidity. The ammo box idea is great, but be sure to include a package of sillica gel in each box. A lot of us use only the rechargeable tins of sillica gel, which turn color when they have absorbed their fill, and can be restored to usefulness by a short stay in a moderately warm oven. They are also available from locksmiths and safe companies.
Thanks everyone. The ammo can was an idea, especially since I have several thousand rounds of military surplus ammo that will be kept with it. It is impossible to find brand new ammo cans, and I think instead of trusting the old gasket, I might just vacuum seal the coins inside, then seal the ammo can. Or, I guess I could buy new plastic ammo cans. Thanks again!!
ebay ebay ebay I will have to go through my old links, but there is/was an ebay surplus store that had great deals on good condition metal ammo cans
You could also purchase a safe. They are a little pricy but they make them so that a thief would have to tear out the studs of your house to get them out. Most safes have renewable silica gel units in them for the humidity.
Ammo If you get a storage unit you will find the contract and the storage units insurance policy prohibits you from storing ammo. So If something were to happen to your coins - theft etc. and they find ammo in your unit- all bets are off and all insurance claims would be voided. All of the rest of the suggestions you received are good.
